Upper Cumberland Federal Credit Union was originally chartered in 1935 with the purpose of serving the employees of the Carter Ink Company in Massachusetts. The original name of the credit union was Carter Inx Folx Federal Credit Union. As the Carter Ink Company expanded, an ink manufacturing plant was built in Crossville, Tennessee. Over a period of years, the Carter Ink Company was purchased by Dennison Manufacturing. The Dennison Manufacturing company was already sponsoring a credit union of their own, so it was agreed to move the Carter Inx Folx Federal Credit Union from Massachusetts to Crossville, Tennessee in May of 1978. At that time credit union assets were just over $480,000.00.

For the first 50 years of the credit union's existence there was only one full-time employee on the payroll. By 1985, the credit union had grown large enough to hire a second employee. From 1985 to 1990 the credit union aggressively sought other local employer groups for membership which caused tremendous growth to the credit union. In 1990 the credit union moved out of the Dennison manufacturing facility by purchasing a building on West Avenue in Crossville, Tennessee.

Growth continued for the next five years in the new location by serving local employee groups. Credit union membership was limited to 5 large employers and several small employee groups. If citizens were not fortunate enough to work for these specific employers, credit union membership was not an option for financial services. Citizens who were retired were not eligible for credit union membership. In fact, so many local citizens and retirees were requesting credit union membership, the credit union converted to a county wide community charter in 1995 which allowed anyone who lived or worked in Cumberland County a chance to apply for membership. When the community charter was approved, the credit union name changed to fit the new charter, "UPPER CUMBERLAND FEDERAL CREDIT UNION".

On October 9, 2001 Upper Cumberland Federal Credit Union moved into a new facility at 627 Livingston Road giving members a convenient location, plenty of parking, a three lane drive-thru, and ATM services. In July of 2002 , Upper Cumberland Federal Credit Union was approved to open membership to citizens of Bledsoe and Fentress County.

On March 29, 2007 a branch office was opened in Fentress County in the Clarkrange community with full-services including drive-thru and ATM services. Shared Branching has also been a new feature that allows the membership to transact business at thousands of other credit union location in the United States. Members of many other credit unions can also send their members to our locations for deposits, withdrawals, and account inquiries.

As of December - 2007, credit union assets have surpassed $22 million with over 4,600 members. To serve member needs the credit union is open 52 hours a week. For members who want financial service 24 hours a day, there are many automated services available such as using ATM cards, debit cards, "Gabby" the automated telephone teller, and E-Branch internet banking. With membership now open to three counties (Bledsoe, Cumberland, and Fentress) the future is promising for the members of Upper Cumberland Federal Credit Union.
